GUBC is one of the oldest clubs in the university, established in 1867, the club celebrated it’s 140th anniversary last year. Today we are also one of, if not the, most successful sports club on campus. We medal consistenly at both the Scottish Championships and at British Universities (BUSA) as well as putting forward people for international selection. 2008's boat had 2 GB trialists and 5 Scottish and Irish representatives
The Club
We are based at our own large boathouse on Glasgow Green, located a short walk from the city centre. We have a modern, well maintained fleet of boats which includes 5 eights, 8 coxed fours, 3 coxless fours, 5 pairs and a few sculls. This includes the addition of a brand new coxless four and two new sculling boats with 5 new sets of sculling blades. This has been made possible by an equipment replacement plan, an agreement between the club and the Glasgow University Sports Association (GUSA). The plan allows us to constantly update and upgrade our equipment, which means we can continue to compete at the highest level.
The boathouse also has its own land training facilities. There are 10 ergs (rowing machines), of which three were bought last year. These serve both as a good method for teaching basic technique to novices and as an excellent stamina workout for seniors. There is also a gym where most of the weights sessions take place. The rowers also make good use of the uni gym, situated in the Stevenson Building on the main campus.
We row on a 6km stretch of the River Clyde that runs upstream from Glasgow Green to Belvediere (near Parkhead). The river is governed by its own rules which can be read in the safety section. There are several other clubs around the Green, this makes for a good atmosphere and training environment. The club also benefits from Strathclyde Park, located about 15mins down the motorway at Motherwell. The Park hosts a 2km multi-lane rowing lake, one of only 3 in the UK.
The Glasgow University Sports Association (GUSA) also provide us with funding to support a part-time Head Coach. This year we are proud to have Mr Iain Rice in charge. Iain took up the role in April of last year and has since led the club to its 10th Boat Race victory in a row. Iain was born in Hong Kong and moved to Belfast when he was eight. He attended Methodist College Belfast where he took up rowing. Since then he has been an Irish Champion, Irish Junior International, Commonwealth Medallist, Scottish and GB Unis International as well as spending a period of time training with the famous Leander Club in Henley.
