Great Success for Prince Albert Boys at Henley

Expectations were high for our top 4 of Chris Logan, Iain Rice, James Hayhurst, Daniel Graham and Kerra Templeton, with extra pressure being mounted due to the failure of the Temple crew to qualify. The guys however exceded these expectations and swept away First and Third Trinity before coming up against local rivals Edinburgh on the Thursday. Although form would suggest that GUBC would cruise to victory no one was taking anything for granted. With a rest day on Friday the guys knew they could put everything in to the race, from the off the crew took a powerful lead and were not going to let go of it. Romping home to victory with a verdict of Easily.

Saturday was Semi Finals day and a completely different atmosphere, it saw us coming up against a strong Newcastle crew who had won at BUSA and more recently at Marlow Regatta in S1 Fours. The crowds were noticably bigger and with a large contigent of GUBC supporters and Alumni present all were hoping for Glasgow to pull something out of the bag. Being down off the start there was a big push coming through the barrier, this got back some of the deficit, but with a large headwind blowing down the course the significant weight advantage of the Newcastle crew began to tell and saw them home winners by 3 1/4 Lengths. Well done to the crew for getting Glasgow to the weekend for the first time in a very long time.

Disappointment at Henley Qualifiers

With the decision to send a top four in to the Prince Albert the remaining 8 seniors entered a Temple crew. On the back of such good results throughout the year the four were pre-qualified while the eight had to come down and take part in the agonising process of qualifying. Conditions were very windy and while the crew seemed to be coping well with them the stroke rate it seems was not quite high enough.

Metropolitan Regatta

The first of the big regattas down south saw mixed results for the club, with our fours seeming to succeed while the eights dissappointed. The Saturday saw an S1 Coxed Four entered and an S2 Eight. The eight was first to race and in a tough heat against the likes of Oxford Brookes and Thames Tradesmen the crew could only muster a dissapointing 5th, failing to qualify. The four however, of Logan, Rice, Hayhurst, Graham and Templeton, got through their heat with Molesey and Bristol Univeristy. In the afternoon's final the boys pushed hard at the start to get in to third postion and remained there all race coming in only a second behind Molesey's A crew.

Sunday was the turn of the S1 Eight and an S2 Four. The eight were in a tough heat with Tideway Scullers, Molesey, Thames Tradesmen and Vesta. Knowing a big start was crucial the boys pushed hard and were third at the 500, the powerful start began to pay though and all the crews began to push away with the Eight only coming in fifth. Better luck was had in the Fours event with Glasgow's '3rd' four being put out in the S2 event. With a good draw in the heats the four took advantage of this and qualified easily in second place for the final. The final saw a great race with Glasgow leading from the off all the way to the 1500 at which point a minor crab lead to the pack gaining on them. Hanging in there the crew managed to hold on for fourth, beating Edinburgh Uni's 1st Four in the process. Results can be foundhere.

EUSA Invite
