Stag Hunting in Inverness

GUBC made the long trip up north to Inverness this Saturday (8th). Leaving Glasgow in a convoy of cars, trailers and minibuses in the pouring rain, hopes were not high for good conditions. However upon entering the Highlands we were blessed with blue skies and sunshine all day. The Mens Open 4+ (Graham, Bloomfield, Thoms, Croll, Templeton cox) successfully defended GUBC's title and with it the prized Antlers, awarded for the fastest coxed four of the day. This success was despite Miss Templeton's dreaded curse of having never managed to win at Inverness previously. The Ladies squad also managed 2nd in Women's R2 and Novice classes.

The racing also saw all novice crews get out racing and encouraging performances were had by all, despite fending off attacks from other less sporting Universities the Boys all came away with respectable results while the Ladies had great performances including one boat holding its own despite being put in WR2. Full results found here, photos will be up on GUBC Picasa Site.

Mens Open 4+, GUBC on Tour

First races for GUBC Crews

Saturday 1st saw GUBC out racing in full for the first time this season. Conditions were ideal with flat water and clear skies. Division 1 saw a strong performance from the Mens 1st IV bring home victory in Mens R1 in a time of 18.40. GUBC Ladies had a good performance, espeicially from their B Crew finising a respectable 4th in Womens R2. Division 2 saw a god run from the boys again but due to a collision were subject to disqualification in Mens R2. Notable mention must go to the novice guys however, first time racing and all subjected to two 5k races despite never venturing beyond the 2k bridge previously! All managed to complete without equipment failure, all looks good for the trip up north to Inverness next weekend. GUBC were also winners of the overall University prize son well done all who competed. Full Results found here.

September

Freshers Week goes off with a bang

September saw the start of another academic year and with it swarms of freshers. GUBC were keen to make a big drive for recruits this year and Men's Captain Dougie Thoms ensured this would happen by single handedly distributing 1000's of flyers while on GUSA Helper duty. The annual GUSA party was attended by many GUBC reps, and with this much debauchery and drinking did ensue, photos of which can be seen on facebook. However the real business came on the Saturday with the taster session, which was deemed a success all round with all 100 burgers and cans of beer being consumed and the two novice VIII's out on continual rotation. Thanks to all who helped.

Glasgow University Boat Club competes in Croatia.

Following Glasgow University Boat Club’s success at the British Universities Championships this year Glasgow were invited to represent Britain at the 4th European Universities Rowing Regatta in Zagreb, Croatia. In the blue ribbon men’s eights event Glasgow finished a respectable 8th facing stiff opposition from national squad eights of Croatia and Poland (which included athletes recently participating at the Beijing Olympics).

Prior to the competition the squad spent a week with their twinned club Canottieri Sebino Lovere, on the shores of Lago d’Iseo, Italy. The crew enjoyed excellent training conditions as well as superb hospitality, especially from former GUBC rower Aristide Bonomelli.

This ended an extremely sucessful year for the club notable achievements including runner up in the Scottish Universities Sport Team of the Year award. This recognised the club’s numerous successes at Scottish Championships, Scottish Universities Championships, British Universities Championships as well as Henley Royal Regatta.

Boys off to Italy and Croatia

This month sees the EUSA crew setting off to Italy to train at our Twin club Sebino Lovere in the town of Lovere on Lago d'Iseo. Where sun and good rowing conditions should hopefully be guaranteed.

After final selections Glasgow Uni had three representatives for Scotland at this year's Home International Regatta. Kerra Templeton, coxing the Men's Eight, and Iain Rice and Chris Logan in the Heavyweight Pair and Men's Eight.

The pair's race was not Chris and Iain's best and saw them come in Third. The Eights race was an exciting one with Scotland finishing third ahead of the Irish.

Silver at Nat Champs

With many squad members still pushing for Scotland selection the National Championships was the last time to make a challenge. We sent down a men's pair and an under 23 coxless four. The pair of Iain Rice and Chris Logan had a great heat beating the Leander A crew and winning to cement it's place in the final. The four had a tough draw but managed to get through to the rep, where unfortunately they could not find enough pace to earn a spot in the final.

Sunday was finals day and Rice and Logan were feeling confident of a medal after such a strong performance in the heats. The final saw Glasgow up against two Leander crews, a Tideway Scullers crew and crews from Aberdeen and Bristol. The Leander A crew took a storming lead but Glasgow raced away from the rest of the pack and held this distance for the race, coming in 10 seconds ahead of the third placed Leander B crew. Congratulations also to GUBC familiar, Roberto Usai who got Bronze in the Lightweight singles event.
