Glasgow is a great location for rowing. It's only 20 mins drive to Strathclyde Park and the National Rowing Academy, where all licensed GUBC members get free water time on the 8-lane FISA standard course. In terms of equipment, land training can take place at the Stevenson Building (campus) Garscube (15 mins) or the Boathouse (15 mins).
This year, the club has entered into a relationship with Glasgow Rowing Club, which has given the club access to GRC boat's along with a new coaching scheme. Under our Head Coach, George Warnock, a Glasgow Argonaut of many year's experience the university aims to become retain it's reputation of top university rowing team in Scotland.
We mostly focus on sweep rowing there is sufficient equipment to crew scull in a quad or doubles and some club standard sculls. In terms of turnover, well in the last 4 years (the length of a degree), we've bought 2 new 8's, 2 new coxed 4's, a coxless 4 and a pair/double.
For those that have never rowed before, the sport has a racing category just for beginners so you can become a Scottish Champion in your first year. The novice crews have dedicated coaches and equipment but are still integrated with the more experienced rowers during land training. The National Rowing Academy at Strathclyde Park (20 mins from University) has an indoor rowing facility for up-close coaching. Last years Novices were Scottish University Champions and have have made the final at Fresher 8's at BUSA two years running, winning bronze in 2007. The framework is there for you to succeed.
